Activation Capital is a facility designed to meet the needs of Virginia’s emerging tech and health science companies providing work space, a large meeting room, programs and events. The key features of the building are the central stairs, a roof-top gathering space and a high-volume space that extends from the second floor to the fourth floor and includes a cube that projects from the face of the building. The central stairs zigzag their way up the building through three openings that rotate and change form at each level, creating a distinct visual at each level of the building.

Solution: Working with the architects’ goals to understand where there was flexibility and where there wasn’t was key to provide a structural solution that minimized stair stringers depths but maintained the floating and zigzagged aesthetic of the stairs.

*Garrett Braun was the project manager for this structure while at Lynch Mykins
