Sports and community are an integral part of the school’s history and culture, and the school’s design committee was focused on providing high-quality spaces for their athletes and students. This project brought together thoughtful collaboration and attention to details to provide highly functional and inviting spaces. The basketball gym has 20-foot tall corner windows, allowing light to flood into the spaces and clear views of the athletic fields. A central element of the building design was the learning stairs that occur where the end of the large volume dining hall, that forms the backbone of the building meets the classroom wings.
Solution: Significant structural cantilevers on the second floor were used to create the semicircular stair, to allow for a grand stair case that both emphasizes the classroom wing and provides a gathering place for the students. The structural elements at these locations were carefully located and detailed to meet the needs of the space and the aspirations of the owner and architect.
