The College of William & Mary, a public research university located in Williamsburg, Virginia, wanted a memorial structure to commemorate and honor those enslaved by the university, recognizing the ones who built, operated, and maintained the historic campus. Titled Hearth, the memorial evokes a brick fireplace, which is a symbol of both community and the center of domestic enslavement. The unique structure expresses asymmetric curves and a center void. Solution: Curves hang from carefully located cast in place concrete beams and a central column. The cast in place concrete allows for the unique curves and it achieves its uninterrupted look by hanging it from supports above.
* Garrett Braun was the project manager for this structure while at Lynch Mykins
